Sinanitsa and the Georgiyski Lakes – Pirin

Sinanitsa and the Georgiyski Lakes

+4

Sinanitsa is one of the most striking summits in Pirin - a cleft pink-grey marble massif at 2,516 m, crowned with a view over the whole Marble Ridge. We climb it by the classic route past Muratovo lake and the Sinanitsa Gate, and return on a wild, unmarked path past the Golyamo Vlahinsko lake and the three Georgiyski lakes - a rarely visited side of the mountain, kept almost entirely for experienced walkers. The day is long and demands serious fitness, but the reward is solitude and superb views at almost every moment of the walk.

Tour Itinerary

We set off early from Vihren hut along the familiar Banderitsa valley, past Muratovo lake, climb to the ridge and reach the Sinanitsa Gate - from here the panorama over Sinanitsa lake and Sinanitsa hut below opens up for the first time. From the gate we continue up the ridge path and tackle the last, steepest metres to the summit.
From the top we do not return the way we came. We descend directly towards Sinanitsa hut on a steep, entirely unmarked path along the left shore of the lake. The descent calls for care and poles.
From Sinanitsa hut, instead of taking the familiar way back, we continue on the return route - also unmarked - past the three Georgiyski lakes, across a long scree slope beneath unnamed summits, up a steep climb to the Muratova col, over the Vlahini pass and back past Muratovo lake to Vihren hut.
