At the start of the winter season we are planning an ascent of Ruy peak - the highest point of the Ruy mountains of the same name, which, though modest in height at 1,706 metres, is striking for its pyramid shape and magnificent 360-degree panoramas. In clear weather the summit gives views of Vitosha, Rila, part of the crest of the Balkan range, and the remarkable mountain labyrinth of Kraishte.

Tour Itinerary
The transfer to the village of Zabel takes about 1:30 hours. On arrival we will prepare our packs, hold a briefing and discuss the route, and then set off for the summit.
We start from the village square, and after a little over a kilometre reach the Zabel monastery of „St Dimitar“. For the whole walk we follow dirt roads and earth tracks as the way winds steadily upwards through conifer forest. From time to time, through gaps between the trees, we catch sight of the summit waiting for us to the left. Once we have covered about two thirds of the route we leave the waymarks and head up the eastern slope. Here the ground becomes steeper and we gradually come out into the open, where the summit point rises clearly in front of us.
On Ruy itself our efforts will be rewarded with an exceptional panorama. You can see everything as far as the eye reaches - the nearby mountains of Kraishte, Vlaska and Greben, and in clear weather the distant Vitosha, Rila, the Balkan range, Osogovo and Besna Kobila. If the weather allows, we can take an alternative route on the way back.
