⛰️ The name of the highest peak in the Balkans dates from the Ottoman period. By some accounts it comes from the Arabic musalla, "a place near God". In Muslim tradition the word also refers to the stone on which the dead are laid in a mosque. Another theory links the name to the Arabic musallat, meaning "dominant" or "commanding". Curiously, in Sanskrit the word is also associated with a mystical mountain connected to the life of the Buddha.
At 2,925 m, Musala is not only the highest point in the Balkans but one of the most striking natural symbols of Bulgaria.

Tour Itinerary
We buy lift passes and ride up to the Yastrebets top station. Our walk begins here, and our first stop is Musala hut, where we take a short break. We continue to the Ledenoto Ezero shelter, where we rest for longer, eat, and warm up with tea or coffee. Then comes the final and most demanding part of the route - the steep climb to the highest point in the Balkans, Musala. On the summit there is time for photographs, a rest and a short talk taking in the view, after which we return by the same route.
The terrain is open throughout, with no dangerous sections, which makes the route suitable for walkers in good physical condition with basic mountain experience.
