The Large Ustina Waterfall is one of the most thrilling and off-the-beaten-path routes in the Rhodope Mountains, easily reached from the village of Ustina near Plovdiv. The trail follows a wild, unmarked path and is suited for those who are ready to get dirty, wade through a river, and tackle steep, rugged terrain.
Spring is the perfect season for this adventure — the waterfalls are at their most powerful, the forests are bursting into fresh green, and the river runs wild and fierce. This route is not for those who shy away from unstable ground or steep ascents, though it contains no vertical or technically demanding sections.
Tour Itinerary
We set off from the village of Ustina, entering a forested gorge along a partially marked wild trail. The path is steep and rough — expect roots, rocks and wet soil, especially in spring. We cross the river several times along the way, so appropriate footwear and a willingness to get wet are a must.
We reach the Large Ustina Waterfall with enough time to take in the scenery and rest before turning back along the same trail to the village.
The total hiking time is approximately 3–4 hours, depending on pace and stops. After the trek, we make a well-deserved stop in the nearby town of Perushtitsa, where a local craft brewery is waiting to reward our efforts.
